Recovery architecture

A recovery design for each system that matches what the business has agreed it can tolerate.

Modern data centre building in the desert at dawn

We design how systems recover when a site or service fails: the recovery pattern for each system (active-active, active-passive or restore from backup), the recovery site, failover paths and the automation that runs the steps. Each design is checked against the recovery objectives the business has agreed.

Recovery sites must respect data residency, so designs use in-country cloud regions or data centres in the UAE and Saudi Arabia where required, and allow for local risks such as power, cooling and connectivity outages.

What the work involves

  • Recovery patterns

Active-active, active-passive or restore from backup, chosen for each system by cost and objective.

  • Recovery site design

Capacity, network and data replication for the recovery site, including data residency.

  • Failover automation

Scripted failover and failback steps, so recovery does not depend on one person's memory.

  • Business-owned priorities

Recovery priorities agreed by process owners, not set by IT alone.

  • Tested, not assumed

Plans exercised regularly, with results and fixes recorded.

When recovery architecture needs a redesign

It needs one when recovery objectives and the actual design no longer match.

  • Critical systems have no tested failover path.
  • The recovery site lacks the capacity to run production.
  • Cloud migration changed the architecture but not the recovery plan.
